Paths of Glory (1957)

También llamada La patrulla infernal, fue la primera pelicula (no corto) del gran Stanley Kubrick, prohibida inicialmente por Francia, Suiza, España, Marruecos y Canadá. Es una película catalogada como antibélica, aunque Kubrick dice que en verdad, a lo más, es una película en contra de la guerra.

Paths of Glory está situada durante la primera guerra mundial, donde los franceses quieren ganar un puesto estratégico clave, "el hormiguerro", para tener ventaja sobre los alemanes e impedir su paso. Si bien los acontecimientos están basados en una novela homónima, también están inspirados en un caso real situado en la misma Francia, donde la Décima Compañía del Batallón número 8 del Regimiento Mixto de Tiradores Argelinos fue diezmada, el 15 de diciembre de 1914 en Zillebeke (Bélgica), por haber desobedecido la orden de atacar, lo cual hace que sea más entrete la película.

El hecho de que Stanley mostrara de forma descarnada la sucia realidad de la guerra, en la que a menudo la muerte de seres humanos sirve para satisfacer ambiciones personales y ascensos en la jerarquía de mando, convirtió a Paths of Glory en una película extremadamente incómoda, pero dichosa de ver, que por cierto lo puso inmediatamente como director ejemplar.
